Physics teachers have a family day

17 July 2014

The IOP Physics Teacher Network in Scotland held yet another brilliant family day, at Glasgow Science Centre on 20 June.

The IOP Physics Teacher Network at the Glasgow Science Centre

Attendance topped 140 at the morning session, where Drew Burrett and Fiona Pinelli led a rocket workshop which also included rocket balloons and a paper plane competition. This was followed by a lecture entitled Defying Gravity by Laura Thomas, who gave the IOP Schools lecture a couple of years ago, as well as a visit to the Planetarium – and all this before lunch, leaving a full afternoon for families to explore the rest of the magnificent Glasgow Science Centre.

The afternoon session for physics teachers saw over 50 teachers working with Nick Forwood and Drew Burrett on experiments and procedures for the new Researching Physics Unit of the Revised Higher Physics course. This is a completely new and innovative Unit in the Scottish Revised Higher Physics Course, where practical work and report writing are a significant part of the assessment procedure. This practical element is reprised in the Revised Advanced Higher course, giving pupils plenty of hands-on and report-writing experience before they head off hopefully to continue their STEM subjects at university.

Special thanks to Nick for the work and effort put into developing and rolling this workshop out across Scotland over the past few years.
