Scottish teacher receives IOP award

Lorna McGarty of Holy Rood R.C. High School, Edinburgh, has been awarded an IOP teacher award for outstanding contribution to the teaching of physics.


This will be presented at the Institute’s Awards Dinner on 15 October along with three awards to teachers in England, a teacher in Wales and a teacher in Northern Ireland. All of the awardees were praised for their excellent and inspirational teaching and their dedication to their pupils and the profession.

The IOP’s teacher support manager, Chris Shepherd, said: “Each award winner has an outstanding reputation within their own community, and has affected the lives of their pupils in a positive and lasting way. We are delighted to extend that recognition and honour to these exceptional physics teachers.”

Lorna McGarty is an exceptional teacher who both inspires and challenges pupils, doing her utmost to promote their learning both inside the classroom, and through a wide range of extra-curricular activities. She is a consummate professional, keeping herself abreast of current subject specialist developments and educational thinking, and also demonstrates the kind of leadership qualities that ensure the science faculty at her school continues to grow in quality. She has made an invaluable contribution across the whole local area, inspiring, mentoring and encouraging many colleagues over her long and successful career.
