The conference was part of the International Year of Light in this 150th year since Maxwell's equations were published. Eminent speakers spoke about the many aspects of Clerk Maxwell's work and how his legacy still affects our lives today.

Among the speakers were Professor Higgs and Jim Al-Khalili. A plaque containing Maxwell's equations was unveiled in the Old College Quadrangle of the University of Edinburgh.

The Maxwell torch was also on show at the event, as part of its tour around events celebrating the International Year of Light. IOP Scotland, the James Clerk Maxwell Foundation, the University of Edinburgh and the IEEE sponsored the conference.
