The Big Bounce 2020 - a Festival of Physics - call for content proposals

24 April 2020

The Big Bounce is an annual celebration of science, innovation and discovery. Physics will help to solve the world’s challenges and reveal its exciting new frontiers. The Big Bounce invites all ages to celebrate curiosity and inspire the next generation of explorers.

The festival takes place on the 30 October – 1 November 2020, in a number of venues around Glasgow’s Barras Market, including the iconic Barrowland Ballroom.

The last three years have seen the Festival of Physics attract thousands of visitors in our previous location of Edinburgh, experiencing Scotland’s world-leading physics first-hand. By night, our adult programme celebrates science through music, comedy, and talks, and by day, families get involved with art, theatre, storytelling and hands-on workshops and crafts.

Renamed The Big Bounce for 2020, the festival will highlight the positive roles that innovation and scientific discovery play in our society, and show that physics can be enjoyable and social. This year, to engage Glasgow communities with the upcoming COP26 climate conference (though postponed), the festival will also shine a light on the exciting physics behind climate mitigation and adaptation, and its importance. We’re now inviting proposals for festival content that cover these themes.

We are looking for exciting shows, talks, exhibitions, games, music, art or other creative content for all ages to bring our event to life. We believe that anything is possible in our exciting new venues!

We particularly welcome content that presents under-represented people as physicists or scientists: women and girls, BAME people and LGBTQ+ people. We also encourage proposals with cross-over appeal for those that wouldn’t usually seek out science events. If you are an early-career physicist or science communicator (including but not limited to IOP members), we would be excited to help you develop your idea.

Expenses and limited support are available for those not already funded. If you’d like to join our Big Bounce festival family; please tell us all about yourself and your proposal.

Deadline: 26th May to ensure consideration, though late applications may be considered.

If you have any questions, please contact Mikey Jarrell (IOP Public Engagement Manager for Scotland) at

Note on COVID-19. While we acknowledge the uncertainty around the feasibility of holding public events during late 2020, planning of the Big Bounce will continue as normal. Review of this will be conducted on a rolling basis based on ongoing government advice.
